So VERY early on we put in the "Restore" button in the very top level of the client to communicate to customers the three ways to restore data.

So right away customers were baffled by where to find their backup. So that's how this whole thing started: we just mis-understood how many customers would look for their backup using a program running on their local computer.

Not only that, but if your laptop has crashed, you CAN'T use the software installed on the laptop to restore - the laptop doesn't even boot up.
#BACKBLAZE RESTORE PREVIEW FULL SIZE#
We thought it made sense to preview files in your backup (without downloading them first) in a web browser, then only download the full size files you need after you browsed around. The mistake we made is we thought that because your backup was in the cloud (in the website), you would think it made sense to visit your backup data through the website (just like your credit card payment info) and that was where you would look for your backup data if your laptop was stolen or crashed.
#BACKBLAZE RESTORE PREVIEW HOW TO#
People look around in the client looking for how to restore their data, and we didn't expect this (now it's a really clear trend we do understand, you are most definitely not alone). The opposite is true for restoring backups for some reason.
#BACKBLAZE RESTORE PREVIEW UPDATE#
We worried about this at the beginning, but for some reason all customers are happy signing into a website where their backups are stored to update their payment method. And for some reason this doesn't bother ANYBODY. There is no way to do this in your local client running on your laptop. You can only change or update your credit card by signing into the website. Here is an example fewer people seem bothered by: you can only pay for Backblaze by signing into the website. So early on, we had to decide whether any one piece of functionality was only in #1 above (the client), only in #2 above (the website), or in both.

When we (Backblaze Employees) think about Backblaze, we think of two equal parts:ġ) You have your original data on your local computer, and a Backblaze client on your local computer that has some settings and can "push" files from your laptop to the Backblaze datacenter.Ģ) Your backup "lives" in the Backblaze datacenter, and you can "visit" that backup in your web login to the Backblaze service, and you can change some settings there. Why is there no option in Backblaze to restore everything onto the new drive from the program itself? All I can do is kind of explain how we got where we are now. As /u/YevP mentions elsewhere it is on our roadmap (soon) to address this to match up with customer expectations. why is there no option in Backblaze to restore everything onto the new drive from the program itself?Ĭustomers often ask this, so clearly it's the way many people think of the restore process and we should support that (or do better UI helping customers along). Why is there no restore option? For example, say my D drive fails on windows, I get a replacement the next day. I think it's a matter of pricing, right now those are still relatively expensive so buying a fleet of them might be a bit cumbersome.ĭisclaimer: I work at Backblaze so I'm biased and you should keep me honest. It's a good question - not one I have the answer to, but I'll toss it over to the product team.

Does backblaze intend to have larger capacity USB hard drives in the future? (for example, 18TB hard drive) Yes - you'd need to break it up into two different USB Drive orders.

Wouldn't in this scenario I have to order two 8TB drives since that seems to be the limit? I'd recommend creating a web restore (for download) of mission critical things while you wait for the USB drive to ship (you can have multiple restores at once so that's usually the most efficient option). The main gating factor is how quickly we can "build" the drive and that really depends on the amount of data you have selected for restore. Once we copy the data to the drive and encrypt it we try to priority overnight the drives, so once it ships it gets there relatively quickly. How long does it take to send the USB hard drives to the UK? Sure thing! Let me try to respond inline:
